The ninth session of the DREAMS Diabetes Academy was conducted on November 7, 2024, via the DREAMS Academy web portal. Dr. Junaid Naina, Consultant Diabetologist at Jothydev’s Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre, delivered an insightful lecture on "Macrovascular Complications."

Dr. Junaid explored the various macrovascular complications linked to diabetes and stressed the importance of regular screenings, often overlooked, for early detection and prevention. He highlighted how timely interventions can significantly reduce the risk of severe outcomes.

The tenth session of the DREAMS Diabetes Academy was held on November 20, 2024, via the DREAMS Academy web portal. Ms. Gopika Beena Chandran, Diabetes Educator and Lead for Clinical Trials at Jothydev’s Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre, delivered an enlightening lecture on "SMBG - Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose."

Ms. Gopika provided a detailed overview of the equipment used for SMBG and demonstrated the proper steps for accurate blood glucose monitoring. She emphasized the importance of SMBG in diabetes management and introduced participants to the MySugr app, explaining its features and benefits.

Ms. Geethu provided a detailed session on how to manage hypoglycemic episodes and what all are the measures to be taken to avoid hypoglycemia. She emphasized the importance of regular monitoring of blood glucose to avoid hypoglycemic events.

Ms. Geethu provided an in-depth session on carbohydrate counting and practical measures to prevent hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. She highlighted the significance of accurate carb counting and explained key concepts including Glycemic Index (GI), Insulin Sensitivity Factor (ISF), and Insulin-to-Carb Ratio (ICR), along with practical counting formulas.

Ms. Rithi R. Kurup, Physiotherapist at Jothydev’s Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre, delivered an enlightening lecture on “Exercise ”.

During her session, Ms. Rithi highlighted the vital role of regular physical activity as a cornerstone in diabetes management. She explained how both aerobic and anaerobic exercises enhance insulin sensitivity, glycemic control, and cardiovascular health in individuals with diabetes. The talk also emphasized glycemic management strategies before, during, and after workouts, stressing the importance of mixed or interval activities to prevent hypo- and hyperglycemia.

The session witnessed active participation from the entire T1D family, creating a highly engaging and interactive learning environment. Participants actively engaged throughout the session, which concluded with an interactive Q&A, helping reinforce key concepts and improve understanding of safe exercise practices in diabetes management.

The fourteenth session of the DREAMS Diabetes Academy was held on December 4, 2025, with students accessing the class through the DREAMS Academy web portal. Dr. Asha Ashik delivered an insightful lecture on “Sick Day Management,” highlighting the importance of maintaining target goals for the effective management of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). She also discussed key aspects such as ketosis management, food regulation, medication adherence, and adequate hydration. The session began with an important reminder: “When somebody is sick, glucose levels can go high and fluctuate, which can lead to serious complications - especially in children with Type 1 diabetes. That’s why proper sick-day management is essential.” The program concluded with an interactive Q&A session, enabling participants to clarify their doubts and engage more deeply with the subject.

The 15th session of the DREAMS Diabetes Academy was held on January 14, 2026, with participants joining through the DREAMS Academy web portal. The session featured an insightful lecture by Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev on “Technologies in Diabetes.” Dr. Jothydev highlighted how modern technologies are transforming Type 1 diabetes management, making care safer and more convenient. The session covered key advancements such as Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM), connected glucose meters, Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) systems, insulin pumps, and smart mobile applications, emphasizing their role in accurate glucose monitoring and early detection of glycemic fluctuations.
